Visa for Australia
Travelling to Australia as a tourist
Are you going to Australia for a holiday and not planning to work? Then you'll usually need either an eVisitor (subclass 651) or an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601). Which visa you need depends on your nationality.
With a tourist visa, you can visit Australia for a holiday, to visit family, or for a short business trip. Working is not permitted, and studying is only allowed for a limited period.
For many European travellers, including those from the Netherlands and Belgium, an eVisitor visa can be applied for free of charge. Travellers from other countries often require an ETA, which carries an administration fee. Always check which visa applies to your passport before you depart.
On the internet you'll come across many different providers where you can apply for a visa. To avoid extra costs, I recommend doing this directly through the official Australian government website.
Travelling to Australia as a backpacker
Would you like to work during your trip through Australia to fund your travels? Then a Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) or Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462) is the most popular option. Which visa you can apply for depends on the country of your passport. Both visas give you the same rights in most cases.
With a Working Holiday Visa you may:
- Stay in Australia for up to 12 months.
- Work to fund your trip.
- Study for up to 4 months.
- Enter and exit Australia unlimited times during the validity of your visa.
- Apply for a second and even third Working Holiday Visa under certain conditions.
The cost of a first Working Holiday Visa is currently $840 AUD. Always check whether your nationality is eligible for a Working Holiday Visa and which conditions apply to you before submitting your application.
