Which insurance should you choose?
Each hire company offers different insurance packages, with their own terms and coverage. In practice, you can almost always choose from three options:
1. Basic Insurance (included)
Basic insurance is included as standard in the hire price. This sounds attractive, but has an important disadvantage: the bond (excess) is often very high, usually between NZD $3000 and NZD $8000.
In case of damage, this amount will be withheld and in some cases the costs can be even higher. Additionally, with this package you are often only covered to a limited extent, for example for damage to or by third parties.
Please note: even with minor damage, hire companies can be strict in their handling and charge costs. This can cause unnecessary stress during or after your trip.
2. Mid-range insurance (NZD $30 – $70 per day)
With mid-range insurance you significantly reduce the bond, sometimes even to NZD $0.
You're better covered, including for damage caused by your own actions. In some cases there's still an excess remaining, depending on the hire company.
This package offers a good balance between price and peace of mind, but isn't always completely worry-free. Each hire company has its own terms and conditions, so it's important to know exactly what these are before you make a choice.
My advice
Are you choosing to hire a Campervan in New Zealand? Then I always recommend going for the premium insurance package. I'm happy to inform you about what is and isn't included with your Campervan.
The roads in New Zealand can be narrow, winding and sometimes challenging. The last thing you want is for a small mishap to make your dream trip unnecessarily expensive or stressful.
For a relatively small additional cost, you travel completely worry-free, and that's exactly what you want during your road trip through New Zealand.
