Campervan types explained
Choosing the right Campervan is one of the most important parts of preparing for your road trip through Australia or New Zealand. The range is vast and every hire company uses different names, layouts and facilities. Two Campervans that appear virtually identical at first glance can differ quite considerably in practice.
Generally, there are three main types of Campervans to choose from:
- a compact 2 Berth
- a more spacious Campervan
- a fully equipped Motorhome
Which type of Campervan suits you best doesn't just depend on the number of travellers. Your budget, desired comfort level, luggage, route and style of overnight stays also play an important role.
Additionally, it makes a difference whether you're travelling through Australia or New Zealand. In New Zealand, a certified self-contained Campervan is important when you want to make use of many designated freedom camping spots. In Australia, you can also stay at many campsites and free overnight spots with a simpler Campervan type.
Good to know: a camper type doesn't automatically tell you anything about the facilities. A compact camper, a Campervan and a motorhome can all be self-contained, but this varies by model, hire company and country.
Review the different Campervan types below and discover which option best suits your journey.
