Visiting Milford Sound during your road trip through New Zealand

Milford Sound is perhaps New Zealand's most famous attraction. This impressive fjord lies on the west coast of the South Island, right in the heart of Fiordland National Park. The area is renowned for its towering cliffs, deep fjords, waterfalls, rainforest and rugged, pristine wilderness. It's no wonder Milford Sound draws travellers from all over the world.

The most popular way to experience Milford Sound is with a boat cruise through the fjord. During such a cruise you'll sail past steep rock walls, waterfalls and with a bit of luck you'll spot seals, dolphins or even penguins along the way.

What makes Milford Sound extra special is that it's actually impressive in any weather. Is the sun shining? Then the colours of the water, mountains and rainforest come into their own beautifully. Is it raining? Then the landscape transforms completely and hundreds of waterfalls appear, cascading down from the mountains.

Both options have advantages. Which choice suits you best depends on how you want to travel and how much freedom you want to have along the way.

Milford Sound with your own transport

Visiting Milford Sound yourself with your Campervan gives you a lot of freedom. You determine your own pace, choose where you stop and can stay overnight along the way in Fiordland National Park.

Having your own vehicle is particularly appealing if you have plenty of time, enjoy travelling independently and don't mind driving a long and intensive route.

Visiting Milford Sound on a tour

An organised tour to Milford Sound is the most relaxed option for many travellers. You don't have to drive yourself, you don't have to figure anything out, and you can enjoy the scenery along the way.

Tours depart from Queenstown and Te Anau, among other places. The journey is considerably shorter from Te Anau, but a day trip from Queenstown is also perfectly feasible.

Especially if you have limited time or don't fancy a long day of driving, a tour to Milford Sound is a really good choice.
