Road trip through New Zealand's North Island
The North Island of New Zealand is sometimes overshadowed by the South Island, but that's actually unfair. This region offers a unique mix of volcanic landscapes, geothermal areas, beautiful beaches, ancient Māori culture and vibrant cities.
From the film sets of Hobbiton and the geysers of Rotorua to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and the idyllic Bay of Islands. The North Island is surprisingly diverse and makes a fantastic destination for a Campervan trip.
Precisely because the distances are relatively short, you can discover many different landscapes in a short time. A road trip across the North Island is therefore ideal for travellers who want to combine nature, culture and adventure.

Why the North Island is so special
The North Island feels completely different from the South Island. Here you'll find active volcanoes, boiling mud pools, hot springs and a strong connection to Māori culture.
Additionally, the island has a milder climate than the South Island, which means you can travel here comfortably virtually all year round.
Along the way, vibrant cities, rainforests, rolling hills, white sandy beaches and national parks alternate with each other. It's precisely this variety that makes a road trip across the North Island so enjoyable.

How much time do i need?
Although the North Island is smaller than the South Island, there is an incredible amount to discover.
The advice is:
- 1 week The main highlights between Auckland, Hobbiton, Rotorua and Tongariro National Park.
- 2 weeks Enough time to also add Coromandel, Bay of Islands or Wellington and do multiple walks along the way.
- 3 weeks or longer The ideal travel time to explore the North Island at a relaxed pace and include lesser-known spots.
Best time to visit
The North Island is a beautiful destination for a road trip all year round.
The period from October through to April generally offers the best chance of pleasant weather. During these months, temperatures are comfortable and the days are longer, ideal for walks and outdoor activities. During this period, Campervan prices are naturally higher due to the popularity of the travel season.
Winter also has its charm. Because the climate is relatively mild, you can still visit many destinations. Do bear in mind that it can snow in Tongariro National Park and some walking tracks may be temporarily closed. Campervan prices are very low in winter. This way you can drive a very luxurious motorhome on a very tight budget.
