Best time to visit Australia
Australia is big, really enormous. Because of that, there isn't one specific "best time to travel" for the entire country. It depends entirely on where you're going and what you want to see.
Due to Australia's size, the country has multiple climate zones. This means there's practically always a region where the weather is good for travelling at that particular time.
To keep things simple, you can roughly divide Australia into two areas: the south and the north.
The southern part of Australia (think Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide) has four seasons, similar to Europe. The best time to travel here is between September and April, from spring through to autumn. During this period, temperatures are pleasant and the weather is generally stable. Even in spring and autumn, it's often still lovely to travel here, whilst you avoid the extreme heat of summer.
The northern part of Australia (such as Darwin, Kakadu and the tropical north) works very differently. Here you don't have four seasons, but two: the dry season and the wet season.
The best time to visit the north is between May and September, during the dry season. You can expect warm temperatures, little rain and good accessibility to most areas.
The wet season, which roughly runs from November through to March, is best avoided in this region. During these months it's very hot and humid, and heavy rainfall can cause roads and national parks to be (partially) closed.
Best time to visit the East-Coast of Australia
To keep things clear, it's handy to look at the best time to travel for each route. One of the most popular road trips in Australia is without a doubt the east coast, between Cairns and Sydney.
During this route of around 2,500 kilometres, you'll travel through different climates. You'll pass tropical rainforests in the north, beautiful beaches along the way, and end up in a temperate climate in the south. It's precisely this variety that makes this road trip so special, but it also means that timing is important.
The best way to plan this route is to look at the weather in Cairns, the tropical north. Here you have to deal with the wet season.
- Travelling during the period when the wet season is about to begin (around November)? Then it's smart to start in Cairns and drive south. This way you avoid getting caught in the wet season later in your trip.
- Travelling at the end of the wet season (around March/April)? Then it's better to start in Sydney and finish in Cairns. The chance of more stable weather in the north is greater then.
Travelling mid-Australian summer (December to February)? You'll automatically find yourself partly in the wet season in the north. That doesn't mean you should avoid this route, but it does mean you need to be flexible. Some activities or areas may be temporarily less accessible due to the weather.
Travelling during the Australian winter (May to September)? Then it matters less where you start or finish. In Sydney it can be a bit cooler, but often sunny, while in the north you can count on warm and dry weather.

In short: the east coast can be travelled year-round, but by planning your route cleverly you'll avoid being in the tropical north at the wrong time.

Best time to visit the West-Coast of Australia
The west coast of Australia is rugged, vast and considerably less touristy than the east coast. A road trip from Perth to Darwin takes you past impressive nature such as the Ningaloo Reef, Karijini National Park and the Kimberley.
This route runs largely through northern Australia and therefore through a tropical climate. That means good timing is extra important here.
The best time to drive this route is between May and September, during the dry season. During these months you can count on warm temperatures, little rain and well-maintained roads.
The period to avoid in these areas is November through March, due to the wet season in the north. During this time it's extremely hot and humid, and roads and national parks may be (partially) closed due to heavy rainfall.

- Iconic natural areas such as Ningaloo Reef, Karijini National Park and the Kimberley region
- Unique stops like Monkey Mia, Broome and Kakadu National Park
- Rugged, pristine landscape of the Australian outback
- Tropical coastlines with total freedom
In short: want to drive the full west coast up to Darwin? Go between May and September.

Best time to visit the South-East Coast of Australia
The route from Sydney to Melbourne or Adelaide is perfect if you want to do a shorter road trip along the south-east coast of Australia. You'll drive past beaches, national parks and charming coastal towns. You'll also encounter an incredible amount of wildlife during this road trip, and for many people that's a bucket list item they're keen to tick off.
This region has a temperate climate and is therefore best travelled from September through to April.
- In summer (December – February) it's warm and ideal for beach days, but busier and prices are generally higher.
- In spring and autumn the temperatures are milder and it's quieter. The advantage is that prices in these periods are also lower than in the summer months.
Because you're not travelling through the tropical north, you don't have to deal with a wet season here like you do in Cairns or Darwin.

- Various spots to see wildlife such as koalas
- Vineyards in the Barossa Valley

In short: an ideal route for almost the entire year, with September to April as the best period.
Best time to visit the South-West Coast of Australia
The southwest of Australia has a completely different climate to the north and is therefore much more flexible in terms of travel time. During this route you'll discover green landscapes, beautiful coastlines and famous spots like Margaret River and Esperance.
The best time to visit is between September and May. During this period, temperatures are pleasant and it's ideal weather for road trips, beaches and outdoor activities. The summer months (December to February) are the warmest and perfect for beach days, but also busier. In spring and autumn it's often quieter and still very pleasant.
From my own experience, the spring months are the best time to visit this region. In October and November, everything is in full bloom, rivers and waterfalls are flowing abundantly, and temperatures are wonderfully pleasant. During this period, Southwest Australia is truly at its most beautiful.

- Expansive vineyards in the Margaret River region
- Unique nature & forests, famous for karri trees
- Wildlife: whale watching, swimming with dolphins and kangaroos on the beach
In short: the southwest can be travelled almost year-round, with September to May being the best period. The peak months for this are the spring months of October and November.
