Travelling to New Zealand as a tourist

Are you going on holiday to New Zealand? In most cases, you won't need a traditional visa, but rather an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority). This digital travel authorisation is mandatory for travellers from most visa-waiver countries and is valid for two years. Per visit, you're generally allowed to stay in New Zealand for a maximum of three months (for British passport holders, six months applies).

You apply for an NZeTA easily online. The cost starts from NZD $17, depending on how you submit the application. Bear in mind that you should ideally arrange the application several days before departure, as processing can take up to 72 hours.

Backpacking in New Zealand: which visa do you need?

Do you want to work in New Zealand during your backpacking trip? Then a Working Holiday Visa is the most popular choice. New Zealand has a Working Holiday agreement with many countries, including the Netherlands and Belgium. The exact conditions, maximum age and length of stay differ per nationality.

With a Working Holiday Visa you can:

• Usually stay in New Zealand for 12 months.
• Travel and work to fund your trip.
• Study temporarily or take a course.
• Travel freely through New Zealand during the validity of your visa.

For most nationalities, the application costs NZD $770. Always check the conditions that apply to your passport beforehand, as these can differ by country.
