Byron Bay: a favourite stop on the East Coast

Byron Bay is without a doubt one of Australia's most famous coastal towns. This laid-back surf village in northern New South Wales attracts thousands of travellers each year who come for the beautiful beaches, the relaxed atmosphere and the impressive nature.

Despite its popularity, Byron Bay has managed to retain its unique character. You'll find a mix of surfers, backpackers, families and locals, which creates a friendly and laid-back atmosphere. During a road trip along the east coast, Byron Bay is a place where many travellers love to stay.

Why is Byron Bay so special?

Byron Bay is known for the combination of beautiful beaches, great surfing opportunities, cosy cafés and impressive coastal walks. Everything is within easy reach and the relaxed atmosphere ensures you immediately get that holiday feeling.

Additionally, Byron Bay is located at the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. This makes it one of the first places in Australia where the sun rises.

I lived in Byron Bay for a few months myself and understand exactly why so many travellers stay longer than planned. The relaxed atmosphere, beautiful beaches and stunning nature make it a place where you quickly feel at home.

Cape Byron Lighthouse

The most famous attraction in Byron Bay is without a doubt the Cape Byron Lighthouse.

From the iconic white lighthouse, you have a spectacular view over the ocean and the rugged coastline. From here, you look out over the most easterly point of the Australian mainland.

The walk to the lighthouse is an experience in itself. Along the way you'll enjoy stunning views and have a good chance of spotting dolphins or sea turtles in the ocean. Between June and November, thousands of humpback whales migrate along the coast, making Byron Bay one of the best places in Australia to see whales.

My advice: visit the lighthouse early in the morning for sunrise. On clear days, this is one of the most beautiful spots in Australia to start the day.

The most beautiful beaches

Byron Bay has several beaches, each with its own character.

Main Beach is right next to the town centre and is ideal for swimming, sunbathing or taking your first surf lesson.

Are you looking for a quieter beach? Then Wategos Beach and Little Wategos Beach are absolute must-visits. These sheltered bays are among the most beautiful beaches in the region and are perfect for spending a relaxed afternoon.

For experienced surfers, The Pass is one of Australia's most famous surf spots. Long, mellow waves form here that are ideal for longboarders.

Note: these beaches are best accessed on foot. Only limited parking is available.

Surfing in Byron Bay

Byron Bay has been known for decades as one of Australia's best surfing destinations. Thanks to the variety of beaches and waves, there's a suitable surf spot for every level, from complete beginners to experienced surfers.

Never surfed before? Then Main Beach is the perfect spot to start. The waves here are generally friendly and there are multiple surf schools offering daily group and private lessons. Expect to pay around AUD $70 to $100 for a two to three hour group lesson, including surfboard and wetsuit. If you prefer one-on-one instruction, you'll pay an average of AUD $150 to $250 for a private lesson.

If you're more advanced, The Pass is the surf spot in Byron Bay. This world-famous point break is known for its long, consistent waves and attracts surfers from all over the world. Clarkes Beach is also popular with beginner and intermediate surfers, while Broken Head, just south of Byron Bay, offers more challenging waves for experienced surfers.

Even if you don't go in the water yourself, Byron Bay is a fantastic spot to watch surfers in action. Take a seat on the beach or walk to the lookout at Cape Byron Lighthouse. From here you have a magnificent view over the ocean and you can see the surfers catching the perfect waves.

Kayaking with dolphins

One of the most popular activities in Byron Bay is a sea kayaking tour.

During these excursions you paddle along the coast whilst dolphins regularly swim curiously around the kayaks. With a bit of luck you'll also spot sea turtles or, during whale season, humpback whales. It's a unique way to experience Byron Bay from the water.

Good providers for a kayak tour are Go Sea Kayak Byron Bay or Cape Byron Kayaks. Both are located at the beach near Byron Beach. Prices vary between AUD $80 and $120 for a 2 to 3 hour tour.

Nightcap National Park

Got a bit more time? Then a visit to Nightcap National Park is definitely worth it.

Here you'll find ancient subtropical rainforest, impressive waterfalls and various short walks. The most famous is Minyon Falls, where a waterfall plunges more than 100 metres down.

The park is about an hour's drive from Byron Bay and makes a nice change from the beaches.

Staying overnight with a Campervan in Byron Bay

Byron Bay is popular with Campervan travellers and has multiple holiday parks and campgrounds.

Because parking in the centre is limited and relatively expensive, it's smart to leave your Campervan at the campsite and explore the city on foot or by bike.

Book your campsite well in advance if you're travelling during the Australian summer or school holidays. Byron Bay is a popular destination with locals too, so campsites fill up quickly.

Best time to visit Byron Bay

Byron Bay is a great destination year-round. The winters are mild and the summers warm.

Personally, I find the period from September to November and March to May the most pleasant. In spring and autumn, the temperatures are comfortable and it's often a bit quieter than in summer.

Travelling between June and November? You've got a great chance of spotting humpback whales migrating along the coast.

How much time do you need in Byron Bay?

For Byron Bay, I'd plan at least two to three nights. This is a typical village where you don't want to have every day completely packed with activities. Still, this gives you enough time to visit the various attractions and possibly book a kayak tour.

The rest of the time you can spend enjoying the beaches, surfing or in the village enjoying the variety of dining establishments.
