Whitsundays: paradise in Australia

When you think of dazzling white beaches, crystal-clear turquoise water and tropical islands, you think of the Whitsundays. This island group off the coast of Queensland is one of Australia's most beautiful destinations and is an absolute highlight of an east coast road trip for many travellers.

The Whitsundays consist of 74 tropical islands, most of which are uninhabited. Together they form a paradise for lovers of nature, beaches, snorkelling and sailing. It's no wonder the Whitsundays are often combined with a visit to the Great Barrier Reef.

Why are the Whitsundays so special?

What makes the Whitsundays unique is the combination of tropical islands, crystal-clear water and stunning bays. You can relax on world-famous beaches, snorkel among colourful fish or join a multi-day sailing trip.

The islands sit right in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which means the underwater world is every bit as impressive as the beaches.

In addition, many parts of the Whitsundays are protected nature reserves. This makes it feel as though you're discovering an untouched piece of Australia.

Whitehaven Beach

The most famous attraction in the Whitsundays is without a doubt Whitehaven Beach.

This seven-kilometre-long beach is regularly voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The sand consists of 98% pure silica, which keeps it brilliantly white and barely warm, even on hot days.

The crystal-clear turquoise water creates a stunning contrast with the white sand and makes Whitehaven Beach one of Australia's most photographed locations.

Hill Inlet Lookout

Walk a short uphill trail from the beach and you'll reach Hill Inlet Lookout.

From this viewpoint you look out over the famous sandbanks that constantly change shape with the tide. Especially at high and low tide, spectacular patterns of white sand and bright blue water form here.

This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Australia.

Where do you visit the Whitsundays from?

Airlie Beach

Almost all tours to the Whitsundays depart from Airlie Beach.

This charming coastal town is the perfect base and offers plenty of accommodation, restaurants, campsites and supermarkets. If you're travelling in a Campervan, Airlie Beach is the ideal place to stay for a few days.

From here, dozens of boats depart daily to the various islands. There are multiple operators offering this service, so research thoroughly beforehand to find which one suits you best.

The different ways to explore the Whitsundays

Every traveller experiences the Whitsundays in a different way. Fortunately, there's a suitable excursion for every type of traveller.

Day trip

A basic day tour is a good option. During these excursions you'll usually visit Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet Lookout and one or more snorkelling locations. This is ideal when you have limited time but still want to see the highlights.

Are you aware that these tours are focused on 'ticking off' the popular locations without really taking the time for them. If you want the full experience, choose one of the options below.

An average day tour will cost you around AUD $100 to $150.

Sailing trip

The Whitsundays are known worldwide as one of the most beautiful places to sail.

During a sailing trip, you'll cruise past various islands, go snorkelling, and enjoy the views while sailing across the azure-blue ocean.

There are both luxury catamarans and traditional sailing boats available. You can also choose to do this in just one day or, when you have more time, a multi-day tour.

For a one-day sailing trip, you'll pay on average AUD $150 to $250.

Multi-day sailing trip

Got two or three days to spare? Then a multi-day sailing trip is, in my opinion, the best way to experience the Whitsundays. I did a three-day/two-night tour myself on a smaller sailing boat with a group of around 15 people. To this day, still one of the highlights of all my years in Australia!

You sleep on board, visit multiple snorkelling locations and enjoy sunsets in places where day tourists have long since departed. Together with your group you enjoy a drink on the boat and sufficient time is allocated for each activity so that you get the perfect experience.

For backpackers there are sociable group boats, while couples, or people who don't like crowds, often choose a more luxurious catamaran or sailing boat for smaller groups.

Scenic flight

Do you want to admire the Whitsundays from the air?

From Airlie Beach, you can take a scenic flight over Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and the Great Barrier Reef. During these flights, you'll also see the famous Heart Reef, a naturally formed coral reef in the shape of a heart.

Although a scenic flight is pricey, for many travellers this ranks among the most beautiful experiences in Australia. If you're not so keen on boat trips, then this is the best option.

Snorkelling in the Whitsundays

Besides the beautiful beaches, the island group is known for its colourful underwater world.

Many excursions stop at snorkelling locations where you can encounter turtles, reef fish, corals and sometimes even rays or reef sharks.

While the Great Barrier Reef further offshore is often even more impressive, the Whitsundays also offer excellent snorkelling opportunities. If you don't have time during your east coast road trip to do both the Whitsundays and a separate Great Barrier Reef excursion, opt for an extended Whitsundays tour that combines both highlights in one day.

Staying Overnight with a Campervan in Airlie Beach

If you're travelling by Campervan, you'll typically stay in or around Airlie Beach. Here you'll find several holiday parks and campgrounds with good facilities.

Since Campervans cannot travel to the islands, most travellers leave their Campervan at the campsite for one or more nights whilst they take a day trip or multi-day tour. Would you prefer to stay more centrally in Airlie Beach? Then you can choose to spend a few nights in a hostel. There are also options for private rooms here, should you want a bit more privacy.

Best time to visit the Whitsundays

The Whitsundays are beautiful year-round, but the best period runs from May through to October.

During these months, it's the dry season in Queensland. You'll have pleasant temperatures, plenty of sunshine and less chance of rain.

From November to April it's warmer and more humid. Jellyfish can also occur during this period. On organised tours you'll therefore often be given a protective stinger suit.

How much time do you need for the Whitsundays?

For the Whitsundays, I'd plan at least two nights in Airlie Beach.

This gives you enough time for an excursion, to explore Airlie Beach itself, and provides some flexibility if the weather doesn't cooperate.

If you have the opportunity, opt for a multi-day sailing trip. That is without doubt the most beautiful way to experience the Whitsundays.
