How much does Campervan hire cost in Australia?
What does it cost to hire a Campervan in Australia?
Australia is suitable for travel all year round. Broadly speaking, the lower half of Australia is suitable during summer and the upper half during the Australian winter, also known as the dry season there. Because you can travel Australia all year round, it's therefore also difficult to say what the costs are for a Campervan. This depends strongly on which season you go, what your pick-up and drop-off locations are and what type of Campervan you want.
Additionally, most hire companies set their prices based on the available supply. The less availability there is, the more expensive a Campervan becomes. So you don't want to wait too long to secure a Campervan for your roadtrip through Australia!
On average, when hiring a Campervan in Australia, you can expect:
The hire prices mentioned give a good indication of the costs for a Campervan in Australia. Do bear in mind that insurance costs will be added on top of this.

Which insurance should you choose?
Almost every Campervan hire company offers multiple insurance packages. Which option suits you best depends on how much risk you're willing to take during your road trip. In practice, you can usually choose from three different packages.
1. Basic Insurance (included)
Almost every Campervan hire includes basic insurance. Although you don't pay anything extra for this, it's often also the insurance with the least cover.
The excess is usually between AUD $3,000 and AUD $8,000, depending on the hire company and the type of Campervan. In the event of damage, this amount is (partially) withheld from your bond. Additionally, certain parts, such as windscreens, tyres or damage to the underside of the Campervan, are often not covered or only partially covered.
Good to know: even minor damage can quickly lead to high costs. Therefore, always check carefully what is and isn't covered under the basic insurance. Fill in the Campervan form and Good Day Travels will help you with this.
2. Mid-range insurance (AUD $25 to $65 per day)
Most travellers opt for mid-range insurance. With this package, the excess is significantly reduced and with many hire companies it's even waived entirely.
In addition, you benefit from more comprehensive cover than with basic insurance. Exactly which damage is covered varies by hire company. So always check the policy terms carefully before making your choice.
Bear in mind, though, that even this insurance package doesn't always cover all forms of damage. For certain components, such as tyres, windows, the underside or the roof of the Campervan, there may still be exclusions or additional conditions.
For most travellers, this insurance offers a good balance between price, cover and peace of mind.
My advice
If you're going to hire a Campervan in Australia, I always recommend choosing the premium insurance.
Australia has long distances, unsealed roads and plenty of wildlife. Especially during sunrise and sunset, you're more likely to encounter kangaroos, emus or other wildlife. An accident can happen in the blink of an eye.
For a relatively small additional amount, you prevent unexpected costs and can enjoy your road trip with peace of mind.
I'm happy to help you compare the different hire companies and explain exactly which insurance best suits your trip and which costs are or aren't included.
