Visiting Noosa during your Australia road trip

Noosa is one of the most popular destinations on Australia's east coast. This charming coastal town, located about a two-hour drive north of Brisbane, is renowned for its beautiful beaches, relaxed atmosphere and impressive nature. Whether you want to surf, hike, spot wildlife or simply enjoy the beach, Noosa has something to offer every traveller.

It's precisely this combination of nature, laid-back charm and activities that makes Noosa a firm favourite for many travellers on a road trip between Brisbane and Cairns.

Why is Noosa so special?

Where many beach resorts focus primarily on the beach and nightlife, Noosa has much more to offer. You'll find a charming town centre with lovely cafés and restaurants, but also one of Australia's most beautiful national parks located right next to the town.

Additionally, Noosa is an excellent place to linger a little longer. The relaxed atmosphere means many travellers end up staying here longer than planned.

Noosa National Park

The absolute highlight of Noosa is without a doubt Noosa National Park.

This national park sits right on the coast and is free to enter. The most famous walk is the Coastal Walk, a route along spectacular cliffs, secluded bays and beautiful viewpoints over the ocean.

Along the way, you've got a great chance of spotting wild koalas high up in the eucalyptus trees. Keep a good eye on the ocean too, as you'll regularly see dolphins swimming past. Visiting Noosa between June and November? Then there's a good chance you'll even see humpback whales migrating along the coast.

You don't have to walk the entire trail. Even a short section of the route offers stunning views.

Main Beach

Right in the heart of Noosa lies Main Beach, one of the few beaches on Australia's east coast that's largely sheltered from the wind.

As a result, the waves are often calmer and the beach is ideal for swimming, relaxing or taking your first surf lesson.

Running along the beach is Hastings Street, the place for a drink, lunch or dinner. You've got various great spots here and something for everyone. From a quick bite to luxury restaurants.

Noosa Everglades

One of the most remarkable excursions from Noosa is a visit to the Noosa Everglades.

This vast nature reserve is one of only two everglades systems in the world. You'll cruise here over mirror-smooth water through pristine wilderness, where the surroundings are beautifully reflected. It's no wonder this area is known as the Mirror River.

The dark water is immediately striking, but don't be fooled. The colour comes from natural tannins released by the leaves and bark of the surrounding eucalyptus trees and tea trees. This gives the water a tea-like colour, whilst it remains surprisingly clean and clear.

You can explore the Everglades by canoe, kayak or on an organised boat tour. Especially in the early morning, when the water is almost completely still, the reflections are at their most beautiful. For many visitors, this is one of Australia's most surprising and photogenic natural areas.

Surfing in Noosa

Noosa is one of Australia's most famous surf destinations and a great spot for both beginners and experienced surfers. Thanks to its sheltered location, the waves here are often gentler than at many other beaches along the east coast, giving you good surf conditions virtually year-round.

Main Beach is the ideal spot for beginners. The waves here are usually gentle and there are several surf schools where you can take a lesson or hire a surfboard. Never surfed before? Then Noosa is one of the best places in Australia to learn.

Are you already experienced? Then First Point, National Point and Tea Tree Bay are popular surf spots. First Point in particular is world-renowned for its long, consistent waves, where you can sometimes surf for tens of metres. In good conditions, these breaks attract surfers from all over the world.

Even if you don't go in the water yourself, it's great fun to watch the surfers from the shore. Particularly around Noosa National Park, you can enjoy a stunning view while the best surfers carve their lines across the waves.

Camping with a Campervan

Noosa is excellently set up for Campervan travellers. In and around the town you'll find multiple holiday parks and campgrounds with good facilities.

Because Noosa National Park and Hastings Street are easily accessible by bike or on foot, it's convenient to leave your Campervan at the campsite and explore the area without your vehicle.

Great campsites include Noosa River Holiday Park in Noosa Heads or Habitat Noosa Everglades Eco Camp. The latter is perfect for when you want to visit the Everglades.

Best time to visit Noosa

Noosa is a great destination year-round.

The period from April through to November typically offers the most pleasant temperatures and lower humidity. Travelling between June and November? You'll also have the chance to spot humpback whales along the coast.

The best periods are spring and autumn. This means September/October and April/June.

Even in the Australian summer, Noosa is popular, although it can be hotter, more humid and a lot busier then.

How much time do you need in Noosa?

Noosa is a lovely and beautiful place to spend a few nights. Want to combine the Everglades with the village of Noosa Heads? Then I would recommend staying for at least 3 nights.

This gives you enough time to explore Noosa National Park, spend a day at the beach, and take the Noosa Everglades excursion.
