Scenic flight

Want to truly see how enormous the Great Barrier Reef is? Then choose a scenic flight.

From the air you see the different reefs, sandbanks and islands in their entirety. The famous Heart Reef in particular is at its most beautiful from a plane or helicopter. Prices for these scenic flights can vary greatly. They depend on the duration of the flight, whether you fly by helicopter or small plane and where you depart from. Cheaper flights start around AUD $150 and the most expensive are around AUD $500.

Although this is one of the more expensive activities, the view is truly spectacular and you'll experience something you won't forget in a hurry.

Liveaboard

For keen snorkellers and divers, there are multi-day liveaboards.

You stay one or more nights aboard a ship and visit reefs that are often not included on day tours. As a result, the reefs are quieter and often even more impressive.

When is the best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef?

The Great Barrier Reef can be visited year-round, but the period from May to October is generally considered the best time to travel.

During these months, it's the dry season in North Queensland. Temperatures are pleasant, humidity is lower, and the chance of clear water is at its highest.

From November to May it's warmer and more humid. During this period jellyfish can also occur, although tour operators almost always provide protective stinger suits.

How much time do i need?

For most travellers, one full day is enough to experience the Great Barrier Reef. With a day trip snorkelling or diving, you'll have plenty of time to visit multiple spots and get in the water several times. Are you a big fan of these kinds of activities? Then a multi-day tour is definitely recommended.

Have you got more time? Then it's definitely worth staying two or three days in Cairns or Port Douglas. That way you can combine the reef with the Daintree Rainforest, Cape Tribulation or a scenic flight.
